Boarders trailers
One of my boarders keeps her trailer here at no charge andwe assume no liability on our part if something was to happen to the trailer. A issue arose this past weekend when the boarder wanted to go to an event. We had 2 feet of snow the week before and although we did plow around her trailer, she wanted the entire parking area plowed so that she could turn the trailer around. This is a big area, big enough for a tractor trailer to be able to spin around. OK my mistake but I actually tried to hint rather then come out and say, I'll plow the parking area but it will cost you 100.00 since she was willing to pay to have her horses hauled to the event. SHe didn't get the hint so I will add YET ANOTHER paragraph to my boarding contract that a boarder can keep a trailer here but is responsible for a trailer plow out fee of XXX per storm. How do I handle it now or just forget about it? Gas, the ATV, the Plow and the operator all cost me money,

Re: Boarders trailers
I make it a point to keep my areas plowed very specifically each time so that it is very clear what gets plowed and what is extra work for me. If it is extra work for me then I charge for my time and materials. Trailer areas should be plowed as such that the trailer can be pulled out but I don't move every trailer - I just plow out in front of it so it may be pulled out. Anything more is extra and would be presumptuous in our barn.

Re: Boarders trailers
I think you made a mistake in your c=planning and communication. We allow trailer parking here, and have a specific area for parking trailers in the regular season, and a winter plowed area. The boarder is responsible for coming and moving their trailer forward before the snow flies if they want to be able to get to it. They are each asked by me what their winter plans are. We plow up to it so a truck could back up and hook it up. I have one boarder who has told me that they will NOT be using their trailer this season and asked was it ok to leave it out back. Try for good communication before the problem arises. Learn from it. Plow it out once, and make sure next year your areas and rules are clear.

Re: Boarders trailers
Thanks, I agree planning was the issue but I blame the boarder for the lack of planning since she needs to get the trailer out! I chaulk it up to learning experiences and will be adding another paragraph to my boarding contract.

Re: Boarders trailers
We charge $25/month for trailer parking, we keep the area in front of the trailers cleared and the parking area butts up to the trailer area and is always plowed in case of an equine emergency. I ask that a boarder notify me 5 days ahead of time if they need the trailer cleared.

Re: Boarders trailers
I had to add to this thread..........we were getting another snow storm and the boarder had plans to go to a show over the weekend. Wednesday I called her and said "this storm is of epic proportions according to some weather people, if you need to get your trainer out on Saturday you need to plan now. The response: Well its a good thing that the storm in Wed/Thurs "we" (and I have to add I like that she said we but come one...........)have until Saturday to get me dug out! As I bang my head on the wall..........
